Our Dream Selves

One trap we fall into is shopping for a person we’re not. As a result, we accumulate things we don’t need or really want. When looking to minimize our belongings, it’s important to understand the differences between our dream selves and our real selves.

Dream me vs Real me

My dream self wears blazers. She has a thorough skin routine. She contours her face. She wears unique jewelry. She goes to the gym.

My actual self wears t-shirts almost every day. I mostly put on moisturizer, sunscreen, and a bit of blush. I have one necklace and three pairs of earrings. I stick with walks.

There is nothing wrong with my actual self. I build my life and shop based on this version of me. My routines and belongings are true to who I actually am, not who I wish I were.

Accept your real self

Our real selves are good enough as is. Advertisements like to tell us otherwise. They say “if you bought this one other thing, you’d be better.” That’s not true.

Of course, we should have aspirations. Personal growth is important and keeps things interesting. But when our dream selves hold us back by making us spend time and money where we shouldn’t, then we must take them off our pedestal.

Shop for your real self

Think of something you own that matches your dream self. Are you really enjoying that item? Do you feel guilty for not? Are you holding onto it just in case you one day self-actualize? I’d argue that these feelings and that item are not serving you. Don’t let a fake version of you dictate where you spend your time and money. They’re not worth it.
