Why Blog?

Hello readers (given that this is my first post, it would probably be more accurate to just say, hello mom). I’m excited to invite you to read along as I blog my path to a more simple, well-prioritized life, and the thoughts that run through my head along the way.

Next week I plan to post on what components I feel are essential to my version of minimalism (with which others may disagree), but I think it would be helpful to first articulate why I decided to join the many minimalist bloggers out there.

I want to be more mindful.

I’d like to be more conscious of my passing thoughts, and why I have them. I suppose this blog will serve as a public diary where I can flesh some of this stuff out. I expect that my mind will change as I pay more attention to my values, which I think is a good thing.

I think something is missing.

To be honest, I don’t follow that many minimalist bloggers myself, but when I do, I miss an examination of how privilege intersects with this lifestyle. Plenty of critics have importantly pointed this out (for example, here and here), but I, a self-proclaimed minimalist, want to also explore and live in those contradictions. I won’t be the first to do so and I’ll share resources as I find them (or comment yours!).
Also, why am I minimalist and not a Libertarian? I think we need to talk about that too. The personal is political and so is minimalism my friends.

I want to trust myself and give myself compassion.

I want to trust that I have something of value to say and that those who read my blog will find meaning from it. I want to have confidence that I will explore these challenging topics without totally saying the wrong thing, and that I can also recognize and apologize when I do. I want to give myself compassion for the mistakes I make, both typos and otherwise.

In conclusion…
I expect to talk about everything in this blog, as long as it loosely relates to my version of minimalism. There is a LOT I can, and will, write about. I hope you (again, most likely just my mom) like it!
